Dark cave, located immediately adjacent to the temple cave and generally unknown except to scientist and cavers, consist of approximately 2 km of passages on several levels. They were at one time developed for tourism but, after their closure in 1980, the fittings had been left to decay. It was removed in the late 1980’s and a new and better walkway built to cover the guano dropping from the ceiling.
The main attractions of these caves are their size and formations, and their ecology. Some large passages are enough for airplanes, and others so tight that one can hardly crawl through them. They consist of seven major sections named Cavern A through to Cavern F and the originally devised in the 1920’s by the leaders of the first major scientific research group and, for the sake of convenience, it is still retained today.
