Putrajaya, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- A total of RM6 million has been disbursed from the Malaysian Disaster Relief Fund to victims of last Sunday's tsunami in five states, Finance Minister II Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said Friday.
The states which received the first phase of the emergency aid are Kedah, Penang, Perlis, Perak and Selangor. Families which lost their loved ones received RM1,000 each, families which had to evacuate got RM500 and those injured received RM200.
The money disbursed did not include contributions from corporate bodies, government agencies and individuals that were being collected by various organisations, he said.
"We have RM12 million in the fund and till yesterday RM6 million had been handed out to five states," he told reporters after receiving RM400,000 for the fund at the Finance Ministry, here.
Nor Mohamed said the ministry was also monitoring donations collected by the various organisations.
He added that the Social Welfare Department had estimated losses of household items at RM7 million. The estimate does not include damage to property.
