MOUNT STONG
Slideshow image
Previous · Pause · Next · Play
"This is Kelantan's highest mountain at 1422m. Located here is a cave, Gua Ikan (Fish Cave). Its name is derived from a solitary rock that looks like a fish."

Go north to Kelantan and spend a weekend at the ever-popular Stong complex; make a trip to the Gua Ikan (Fish Cave), named after a fish-like rock formation inside. Rumour has it that this cave still houses the horde of gold left behind during the Japanese occupation.

Sweat it out hiking (2hrs) from the majestic Stong mountain (1,442 metres high), crossing the waterfall (one of seven in the Jelawang area) route to Jelawang camp where campers camp out in the wild.

You could visit the upper waterfalls and take a well-deserved swim in the cool waters collected in pools at the feet of these waterfalls. Or you can just enjoy the massaging effect of the waterfall as the water hits your skin.  Such tranquility and natural beauty merits the Stong complex to be proposed as Kelantan's state park.

Several  guesthouses in Kota Bharu can arrange for a trip to the Stong complex which will normally take two or three days - a trip worth the sweat for a glimpse into this natural heritage.

Getting There
By Rail
From Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, the northbound express train to Kota Bharu in Kelantan will take you through several small towns including Dabong. From there, you'll need to cross Sungai Galas and head to Jelawang, which is only 3km away.

A new 60km road from Gua Musang (with a 5km unpaved section) now connects Jelawang and Kuala Lumpur. From Gua Musang, you can board one of the local trains that winds its way through forests and remote hamlets to arrive at Dabong 2 1/2 hours later. From there, you'll need to cross Sungai Galas and head to Jelawang, which is only 3km away.
