The world's largest Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is located here, a 40-minute drive from Sandakan. Established in 1964, more than 4,500 hectares of virgin jungle have been set aside as a forest reserve and rehabilitation centre for orang utans. These baby orang utans that are rescued from captivity, illegal hunting and plantations, are rehabilitated before being released into the wilds when they are ready to fend for themselves.
Visitors can come in close contact with this remarkable "man of the forest" and photograph some of the mature females who have gotten so fond of human company that they refuse to go back to the wilds. There is also a platform to watch the orang utan come in from the forest for their rations of milk and bananas. Feeding time is at 10am and 3pm.
