"There's plenty of things to see and do in this second largest state in Peninsula Malaysia. This list of the "Top 5 Things to do" only scratches the surface of all that Perak has to offer but it's a good place to start."

Sip some heavenly Ipoh White Coffee – You can't go to Ipoh, the state capital of Perak without partaking its signature brew – White Coffee. White coffee is a result of roasting coffee beans with only margarine and no sugar, resulting in a roast that is not as dark as regular coffee. The taste is smooth, buttery and just simply amazing. It goes well with pretty much any of Ipoh’s mouth-watering culinary fare – crispy roti bakar, half-boiled kampung eggs, Ipoh hor fun, beef noodles, etc.  Many Malaysians swear that they can’t start their day without Ipoh white coffee, their potent daily go-juice. Read more.

Explore the mysterious Kellie’s Castle -  A sad story enshrouds this long-abandoned mammoth of a home. Construction of this house was started in 1915 by the owner William Kellie Smith but it came to a full halt upon his sudden death in 1926. The locals may not know this historical building as Kellie’s Castle, they call it something else that may invoke chills down your spine – Rumah Hantu (haunted house). Rumour has it that eerie apparitions were seen walking down the hallways of this uncompleted castle during the night. But don’t let that deter you from walking on its grounds and admiring the stately rubbles of this Moorish-influenced architecture during the day.  Read more.

Take a stroll along Taiping Lake Gardens – Let the peacefulness of Taiping Lake Gardens enfold you as you soak in the ample and lush greenery of the majestic trees that surround the serene and calm lake waters. If you want to cover more of its sprawling grounds at a quicker and breezy pace, rent a bike and have a leisurely ride along its scenic grounds. A favourite location for wedding photos, picnics and such, you may even make new friends there with the friendly locals.   Read more.

Go Caving at Gua Tempurung – Five gigantic domes with ceilings resembling tempurung (coconut shells) form the cave, giving its name Gua Tempurung.   Crawl, scrabble and even lower yourself into impossible looking crevices as you go deep down to uncover the secrets of the largest limestone cave in Peninsula Malaysia. An underwater river called Sungai Gua Tempurung runs about 1.6 km through the cave which you can indulge in some spelunking activities. An absolute delightful excursion for the adventurous and those who don’t mind getting wet and some mud over them as they embark on the thrill of caving. Read more.

Jungle Trek at Royal Belum National Park - Prepare to be greeted by the calm turquoise waters of the blue, blue lake, the lush greenery of the jungle, fresh footprints of wildlife and frequent sightings of the eagles, storks and hornbills. If you are lucky, you may even catch rafflesias in full bloom and tapirs, mouse deers, elephants, tigers congregating at the salt licks at night. The fresh air will rush into your lungs whisking away all vestiges of the polluted city air. The delicious kampung food will give you the much-needed energy to trudge through the forest. The gummy smiles and ancient song of welcome of the aborigine folks from the Negrito tribe will warm your heart.   Read more.
