"The Sultan Ismail bridge or popularly known as "Gertak Gantung" (suspension bridge) became an important link between Kota Bharu and Kuala Krai during the colonial time."
The Sultan Ismail bridge, which is popularly known as Gertak Gantung (suspension bridge), became an important link in the passage between Kota Bharu and Kuala Krai during the colonial era. The 70 feet-long bridge which crosses Sungai Nal (Nal River) was built in 1932 and officiated by HRH Sultan Ismail on April 19, 1932.
In the Fourth Malaysia Plan, the road system in the state of Kelantan was upgraded and with the construction of a new bridge next to it in 1986, the Sultan Ismail Bridge was no longer in use. However, Gertak Gantung is still preserved as a historical heritage for the future generations.
The Sultan Ismail Bridge is located at kilometre 9 of Jalan Kuala Krai Road heading towards Kota Bharu. For more information, please contact the Kota Bharu Tourist Information Centre at 609-7485534.
