The fort, on top of St John's Hill, was constructed by the Dutch during the third quarter of the 18th century. It had once been a private Portuguese chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist.
Interestingly, the gun embrasures of the fort face inland instead of the sea: apparently, the Dutch were not expecting sea-borne attacks.

Getting there
Melaka is easily accessible by road. From Kuala Lumpur, you can take coaches to Melaka at Puduraya Bus Station. The two and half hour journey will cost you around RM7.90. Then, take the No.17 town bus from the local bus station.
