Snake Island, or Pulau Ular, is a small and quaint rock-infested island that is decent for a brief getaway from the rest of the world.
Before you cross out this destination based on its name, the island does not actually have snakes inhabiting on it. According to the locals, a very long time ago, snakes were spotted at the estuary and on the island. Hence, the name of the island. As time passed, the snakes gradually disappeared, and the small island became an optimum escape for locals for a quick dip in the waters and a picnic. Bring your favourite book along and you can sit on one of the big rocks at the shores, and bask in the warm sun as you memorise a few of your favourite lines.
It is also a nice place to go snorkelling for visitors outside of Cherating. The water is shallow and the waves are not hard to manoeuvre, which is just right for beginners getting into snorkelling.
The journey to Snake Island via Snake River (Sungai Ular) takes approximately 20 minutes. Cherating Net Enterprise provides transportation to and from the island, as well as equipments for snorkelling. It is a 2½ hour trip and costs only RM50 per person.
