The Sarawak Islamic Museum, located on Jalan P.Ramlee is a beautifully restored Maderasah Melayu Building built in 1930. The museum presents a clear picture of the rich historical heritage and special culture of the Muslim community in Sarawak and throughout the Malay-Indonesian archipelago, and traces connections with the development of Islam in the rest of the world.
The primary objectives in setting up this museum is to present to the people of Sarawak as well as to visitors the splendour and the beauty of Islamic Civilisation. In order words, with the establishment of this museum it is hoped that the public will have greater appreciation and understanding on the contribution of Islam to human civilisation.
It has seven galleries exhibiting Islamic artefacts from around the region and separate fascinating collections of old coins, weapons, costumes, pottery, textiles and jewellery from the Islamic world.
The museum is easily accessible from the Sarawak Museum new wing.
It is open daily from 9pm to 6pm and closed on Fridays. Admission is free.
