"
In the 1890s, tudor-style building used to be the social centre for the high society of KL."
The Royal Selangor Club rests at the northern end of the Merdeka overlooking the majestic Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Back in the tin-rush days in the 1890s, this eye-catching tudor-syle building used to be the social centre for the high society of Kuala Lumpur.
The Royal Selangor Club was also used for theatrical performances as there were no town hall available in the early 1900s.
It was a joyous place with lots of singing and musical performances, although women were not invited to the "celebrations".
Not wanting to feel left out, two women decided to hide under the building to check out the progress. Unfortunately, they were discovered - but were invited to come inside. From that day on, concerts "for men only" became a thing of the past!
