"
Feast your eyes to over 300 magnificent bird species, half of which are foreign species. Birds you can find here includes birds of prey, pelican, cassowaries, emu and ostriches."
Across the straits from Penang Island, in the mainland portion of Penang, lay the 5 acre Penang Bird Park in Taman Tunku, Seberang Jaya, just 7km away from the Penang Bridge. The first bird park in Malaysia, it was officially opened in 1988 and has since then become a joy for bird-lovers and expert ornithologists alike.
The bird park showcases more than 3,000 birds from over 300 species, both domestic and foreign, including sunbirds, hornbills, pelican, cassowaries, emu and ostriches. Occupying a two-hectare well-landscaped park, its distinct feature is the giant walk-in aviaries and geodesic dome, within which the natural surroundings for the birds are simulated.
With its beautifully landscaped garden concept, the Penang Bird Park is adorned with a collection of local flora, including hibiscus, orchids, cacti, bamboo and palm trees. There are also cascades and ponds with colourful fishes, lotus and water lilies, allowing a charming setting for free-roaming waterbirds such as pelicans, flamingos, swans, egrets, storks, herons and ducks.
The Penang Bird Park is also home to several species of deers including the Mousedeer, the smallest deer in the world, as well as other wildlife species including the Giant Alapaima fish, pythons, monitor-lizards and tortoises.
Delightful details visitors will find welcoming include the Chinese-style wooden bridges that traverse the water and Malay huts (wakaf) dot the park grounds. A cosy air-conditioned restaurant in the park serves delicious local and western food.
Other attractions include beautiful landscaped garden with cascading waterfalls and ornamental ponds with lotus, water lilies, Japanese Carps and plants. The Park has also collaborated with zoos in Japan and Hong Kong to bring in exotic birds as added attractions.
