The open-air bazaar which takes up the ground of National Art Gallery and stretches to the periphery of Istana Budaya, gives life to the normally decorous landmarks of Jalan Tun Razak. Here, shopping takes a different persona as visitors and shoppers walk from stall to stall offering colourful and unique work of arts like paintings, photographs, sculptures and handicrafts. Pleasing to the eye are bright and bold paintings normally seen in art galleries or corporate offices; and sculptures and handiworks as simple as jewellery to the sophisticated coconut-shell lamp shade. Bargaining is not the only kick here as most of the ‘transactions' are made with the artists themselves! Just take a closer look and you will see faces of established names like Datuk Lat and Sani of Kopratasa to special painter like the 21year-old Tong Wen Han from Seremban. Also taking up the stalls are curio and antique, batik products and craft products from ceramic, iron wrought, rattan and weaved. If shopping is not the agenda of the day, the art market offers a host of activities like demonstrations – glass painting, batik or pottery making, free hands-on projects, open studio, movie screening, competition and live performances. Movie screening, competitions and live performances like traditional dancers are scheduled programmes while others will go on till 5pm.
