The Johor River played a very important role to the Johor Sultanate, as several spots along its banks have once served as the centres of capital for the sultanate.
Today, tourists flock to Kota Tinggi to have a close encounters with one of nature's mesmerising phenomenon - the beautiful presence of fireflies, glowing in the thousands here. These fascinating insects are found in abundance on the berembang trees that line the banks the Johor River. You will be amazed by the dazzling flicker of lights of the male and female firefly that is part of their mating rituals - an experience that should definitely be on your itenerary should you plan to visit Kota Tinggi. The boarding point for this excursion is at the riverbank near Jalan Tepi Sungai, opposite the row of shops close to Hotel Sri Kota in town.
Towards the evenings, it is also a common sight to see groups of local residents throng the riverbank to engage in prawn catching. The prawns species prized here is the tiger prawn which can be found in abundance in Johor River. However, skill, patience and a little bit of luck are factors that will detrmine the outcome, as the swift flow of the river makes prawning quite a challenge. The more adventurous may rent a small boat to prawn in selected spots of the river.
Located five kilometres north of Desaru, this museum was developed by the South Johor Development Authority (KEJORA), as part of its development project in the fishing village of Tanjung Balau. Fishing has been a major economic source for the seafarers of Kota Tinggi district since long ago and the abundance of it found in the South China Sea has supported them for generations.
A favourite among locals, this tall, cool waterfall with its pristine recreational forests and good jungle tracks, is just one of the many attractions of Kota Tinggi.
