Johor River
" Today, tourists flock to Kota Tinggi to have a close encounter with one of nature's phenomenon - the mesmerising glow of fireflies in the thousands..."

The Johor River played a very important role to the Johor Sultanate, as several spots along its banks have once served as the centres of capital for the sultanate.

Today, tourists flock to Kota Tinggi to have a close encounters with one of nature's mesmerising phenomenon - the beautiful presence of fireflies, glowing in the thousands here. These fascinating insects are found in abundance on the berembang trees that line the banks the Johor River. You will be amazed by the dazzling flicker of lights of the male and female firefly that is part of their mating rituals - an experience that should definitely be on your itenerary should you plan to visit Kota Tinggi. The boarding point for this excursion is at the riverbank near Jalan Tepi Sungai, opposite the row of shops close to Hotel Sri Kota in town.

Towards the evenings, it is also a common sight to see groups of local residents throng the riverbank to engage in prawn catching. The prawns species prized here is the tiger prawn which can be found in abundance in Johor River. However, skill, patience and a little bit of luck are factors that will detrmine the outcome, as the swift flow of the river makes prawning quite a challenge. The more adventurous may rent a small boat to prawn in selected spots of the river.
