GUNUNG SANTUBONG
  • Sarawak Culture Village
  • Sarawak Culture Village
"The legendary Gunung Santubong is a limestone hill popular among climbers and trekkers."

Gunung Santubong is located on the Damai Peninsula, 35km north of Kuching. From sea level, it's rainforest-covered peaks rise steeply to 810m, forming a catchment for numerous streams and a potential sanctuary for a variety of wildlife.

There are a number of local legends about Gunung Santubong. One of these tells of how the mountain came to be and where its name came from. Like many legends, there are several versions of this one. According to one version, the mountain was formed when mythical Princess Santubong was speared by her jealous sister, Princess Sejinjang. Falling over, she gave the mountain its distinctive profile, like a pregnant belly.

According to the other version of this story, the two princesses lived in the heavenly kingdom Kayangan. The Crown Prince fell in love with both of them, but they refused to be joint wives. The King of Kayangan banished the princesses to earth, where they became Gunung Santubong and the nearby Gunung Seijinjang.

Geographically, Gunung Santubong provides a spectacular backdrop to hotel resorts, local fishing villages, and the Sarawak Cultural Village. Its striking peak is visible from Kuching on most days.

Popular among trekkers and climbers, the route involves some steep climbs, including up rope ladders, but the trail is well made, and it provides very rewarding views from the top.

The trail passes through beautiful and diverse rainforest and offers a good opportunity for seeing wildlife, especially on weekdays when the trail is quieter. A pretty waterfall offers a great way to cool off at the end of the walk.

Getting there
It is a 40-minute bus journey to Buntal, on the eastern side of the peninsular. Take Bus No 26 from the Petra Jaya terminal. Buses depart every 40 minutes throughout the day. From here, buses continue to Santubong, winding through the foothills.

"Excellent and well marked trail and climb, next time I will bring trash bags for the trip down, its sad how much trash folks leave behind on Santubong."   by Thomas

"It is a real "kampung" getaway. I feel like I'm in Heaven. I will recommend to all my friends in KL to come and visit this place. People here are so friendly and very helpfull. Very nice view and place if you know how to enjoy mother nature. You can find lot of seafood restaurants at Kampung Buntal just like the one at Port Klang which serve so many dishes with cheaper price. The price is so amazing and the meal so chup...chup...chup...delicious. If I have a chance to go to Kuching again I will definitely come back here. From Kuching city it takes about 30 minutes drive to reach here. As for Sarawak Cultural Village, it is really a living museum. You can experience the real tribal house of all native people in Sarawak. You will enjoy the cultural performance by the village's dance troupe. Sarawak has a lot of very nice place to explore. My advise- please plan your holiday properly before you landed to the Land of Hornbill otherwise you will regret because you have not enough time to visit all beautiful place in Sarawak especially Kuching. Study the place fisrt before you go."   by Siti Faisha Abdullah
