Gopeng
"
Formerly a successful tin mining town, Gopeng is today famous for its natural attractions such as Gua Tempurung, a majestic limestone cave."
About 60% of the 100,000 odd residents are Chinese (descendents of the tin miners), followed by Indians, Malays and the aborigines.
As you drive by the roads of Gopeng, you will pass by charming village houses and farms (converted from former tin mines) reflecting the rural and agricultural lifestyle.
For a small town, Gopeng has its share of famous people who were born or resided for a while there, including:
Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the historic revolutionary leader in China who stayed in Gopeng from 1909 - 1911.
Mr. Eu Kong Pui, the founder of the Eu Yan Sang brand, who settled down in Gopeng in the 1880s.
Mohammad Nor Khalid or better known as Lat, the famous Malaysian cartoonist who was born in Gopeng in 1951
The town is one of the most scenic areas in the west side of Peninsular Malaysia. Little wonder that it is a popular tourist destination during weekends and public holidays. They come to indulge in an adventurous bout of spelunking at Gua Tempurung or Gua Kandu. Water enthusiasts will seek their thrill by White Water Rafting at Kampar River and water abseiling/canyoning at Ulu Geruntum Falls. For theme park fans, the Lost World of Tambun should excite you to no end.
