Completed in 1879, Fort Margherita commands a breathtaking and strategic position along the Sarawak River. The position of the fort had been carefully chosen to command the long straight stretch of river approaching the town, this being the most advantageous point from which to defend the town from possible attack.

Getting there
Take the tambang (a small long boat) across the river from the Pankalan Batu next to the Square Tower on Main Bazaar to the Astana and Fort. The tambang will only cost RM0.30 and the boat can be hired quite cheaply at an hourly rate, around RM20-25 per hour.

"A very picturesque location. If one wishes a more adventurous trip across the river towards the Fort, one can try the sampan which is readily available at the waterfront. The trip will only take about 15 minutes across compared going by land which can take longer, plus the jam! Or alternatively, you can catch a ride in the lavish River Cruise ... slightly pricey though. But truly worth it! " by Liza
