"
The abundance of trees that greets FRIM visitors are like statuesque models – tall, elegant and head turning. The air is fresh and inviting, promising hours of enchantment within."
Gazetted and transformed by foresters and scientists in 1926 - from a collection of abandoned tin mine pits, vegetable gardens and bushes into the lush forest reserve it is today - FRIM has certainly come a long way. As the re-planted trees matured, the forest was researched extensively and a wealth of forestry and ecology knowledge was collected. Through these studies, Malaysian scientists have developed and fine-tuned technologies to make more efficient use of forest products.
Besides being an internationally acclaimed centre of forestry research, FRIM also opens its doors to the public, sharing it's shady park-like arboreta and nature trails for leisurely walks and jogs, moutain biking and educational trips.
There are traditional timber houses for visitors to check out including the Rumah Terengganu, built entirely from Cengal wood without the use of a single nail, and the neighbouring Rumah Melaka.
There are four jungle tracks for the adventurous ones to check out: Keruing Trail, Rover Track, Engkabang Trail and Salleh Trail, all of which will take visitors through some breathtakingly beautiful secondary forests. Picnic fans can spread their mats at the Sungai Kroh Picnic Area where a tiny waterfall resides. Shelters and restrooms are available as well as wading pools downstream for children.
You should definitely not miss walking on the exciting Canopy Walkway, which is located 30m above the ground. This 150m canopy walkway is built on tree tops and is the third of its kind in Malaysia. A maximum of 250 people are allowed on the canopy walkway each day, so prior arrangements must be made if you'd like to experience it. The Canopy Walkway is only accessible from 9:30am to 2:30pm as the afternoon would be winds are too strong and may pose a safety hazard.
At FRIM, camping is available for those wanting to experience a night in the wilderness but prior permission is required.
