Founded in 1906 by a Hainanese immigrant, "The F.M.S", an acronym for the Federated Malay States, was the archetypal European miners' and planters' bar. Reputed to be the oldest restaurant in Malaysia, it has occupied the present premises since 1923, with a hotel upstairs.

Today, it is operated by fourth generation proprietor Pang Chee Ein, "Nephew" of the late "Uncle" Cheam Yeow Toon, as they are known to regular clientele. A new heritage cafe serving Hainanese food has replaced the hotel above the bar.

Getting there
Exit at the Ipoh Selatan, Jelapang or Ipoh Utara Interchange from the North-South interchange. Jalan Sultan Iskandar Shah is located right in the middle of Ipoh town. There are ample signages to guide you there.
User recommendation

"The Old Days!"   by John rogers

"I am a Tourist Guide doing some research. I found this site very good. Being someone outside Perak, I do not know where is this place. If you have add in the address and a location map it will be perfect."   by Lo Siew Choong

"Still one hell of a fine watering hole! Sadly, Nephew said that he will retire in 2006. So the FMS will cease to exist. Alas another piece of history will be lost. The FMS may close but we patrons will always remember it!"   by Gareth Miles
