Though not very smart (their brains happen to be smaller than the size of their eyeballs), they are a pretty sight when their feathers are dried and puffed up in the hot weather, especially when they perform their unique ostrich dance - the skittish jump at anything that emits loud sounds.
Friendly ostriches will even allow visitors to pet and stroke them, but be sure to get the green light first from their caretaker. In addition to the ostriches, there are other varieties of birds reared in the farm such as the Polish Chicken, which is a variety of the stunted Bantam chicken.
Activities at this farm include ostrich rides for children and purchasing ostrich-based products such as the huge ostrich egg (equivalent to 25 chicken eggs and can weight up to 1.5kg) used to make cakes, decorative lamp shades, kaya, etc. The farm receives 6,000 to 7,000 visitors per annum.
Getting its name from a `village of casuarinas or palms`, Desaru in Johor has a stretch of about 25KM of white, sandy beach and lush tropical greenery.
Located five kilometres north of Desaru, this museum was developed by the South Johor Development Authority (KEJORA), as part of its development project in the fishing village of Tanjung Balau. Fishing has been a major economic source for the seafarers of Kota Tinggi district since long ago and the abundance of it found in the South China Sea has supported them for generations.
A favourite among locals, this tall, cool waterfall with its pristine recreational forests and good jungle tracks, is just one of the many attractions of Kota Tinggi.
The Desaru Fruit Farm is planted with many different types of tropical fruits. Their experienced guides will give talks on the different plants and show you around the farm in a leisurely bullock-cart ride or in your own vehicle.
This river that supports several fishing villages is worth a visit, not only for its great seafood but also to experience what life is like in a slow-paced fishing community.
Top 5 Things to do in Desaru
Desaru is known as Johor’s best kept secret, as it is a shielded stretch of beach that is away from the bustling Johor Bharu city, thus making it quite and secluded from the public on most days.
