"This place is one of the efforts done by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in order to protect the endangered species. Conservation work at this centre focuses on captive breeding programme for the sambar deer and indigenous pheasant species."

Conservation work at this centre focuses on captive breeding programmes for the sambar deer and indigenous pheasant species. This 50ha centre was opened in 1971 to develop and maintain a sustainable genetic breeding pool for each of the rare and endangered species it maintains.

The ultimate aim of this centre is to release breeding stocks of these animals back into their native environments to naturally increase wild population.

The Sungkai centre currently has about 63 heads of sambar deer, 15 heads of Timor deer and 14 heads of mouse-deer. The pheasant species available here include 11 crested and great argus pheasants, 29 mountain and Malaysian peacocks, three green peafowls and 19 crestless and crested firebacks.

Getting there
The Sungkai Wildlife Reserve is located about 60km south of Ipoh and 15km from Sungkai village. From the Sungkai toll gate, take the main road leading to the Shell petrol station, where a signboard points the rest of the way.

"The ultimate aim of this centre is to release breeding stock of these animals back into their native environments to naturally increase wild populations is a good idea and we all support this plan (Project). Sungkai is a suitable place for breeding, they has a temperate weather or climate and this solitary species prefers the woodland margins to more open medows and grasslands. Deer are less hardy than wild sheep and goats. Most species prefer to live in forests rather than on the high pastures, though they visit the meadows when there is plenty of grazing and the weather is warm."   by makcikjamilah

"All the deers here are well taken care of. However getting to this place is a bit confusing. Some mioght confuse between the deer [park and mous deer area. The rest is ok."   by moose

"Sekiranya anda tidak berkesempatan untuk melihat rusa-rusa ini di Sungkai, anda boleh berkunjung ke Taman Kancil di Kuala Lumpur. "   by shoana

"It's so difficult to find mouse deer as it's so ingenious and fast. Do the creatures available here?"   by scalia

"reall life animal"   by simon
