"Georgetown is a great place to visit historical landmarks and monuments. The majestic City Hall and stately Town Hall are two excellent example of historical colonial buildings."
Introduction Located on the western end of Padang Kota Lama, along Jalan Padang Kota Lama in Georgetown, is a pair of stately historical buildings - the Pulau Pinang City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya) and Town Hall (Dewan Bandaran) - that presents visitors with a nostalgic link to Penang's illustrious history.
The larger City Hall building is the jewel in the Municipal Council's crown. The Council Chamber, where the 24 Municipal Councillors regularly convene, is located on the ground floor. Inside, you will find stunning timber-panelled walls in the Council Chambers. The City Hall is still in active use today. Next door, south to the City Hall, is the stately Town Hall.
These two buildings embody the elegant colonial architectural design, with regal Corinthian columns, tall windows and spacious balconies on the upper floors. So if you are a fan of historical sites and colonial architecture, you'll do well to pay the City Hall and Town Hall a visit.
Just north of the north of the City Hall building, close to the Esplanade is the Cenotaph, a memorial to victims of World War 1.
History The City Hall was opened 1903 while the Town Hall was opened 1883. Construction for the Town Hall began in 1879 and upon completion, Town Hall served as the seat of the government. But towards the beginning of the 1900's, several renovations and additions were made to the buildings following which the Town Hall was used as one of the main venues for entertainment for both local and European elites until it came to disrepair and was finally placed under the jurisdiction of the National Museum.
