"
Formerly known as Bukit Kanaan, Canada Hill is a great place to enjoy a panoramic view of the whole of Miri city and its surrounding towns."
Climb onto the observation deck at the top of this limestone ridge of a hill for an even better view. If the weather is good, be sure to be there at sunset for some great photo opportunities.
Its distinctive name was due to a Canadian who relocated there in the early days when oil wells sprung like mushrooms, serving as a recruitment manager.
The hill is rich in history being the place where Miri's very first oil rig was discovered and erected. Fondly known as the Grand Old Lady (she is nearly a century old, after all), this historical monument had produced 650,000 barrels of oil in her productive years from 1910 till retirement in 1972.
As you walk around admiring the old derrick, you will be treated with a history lesson via informative pictorial etchings on the walls surrounding it.
