"This two storey museum building, formerly the official residence of the Undang (Chieftain) of Rembau, now houses a significant collection records and regalia of dignitaries."
Although Seremban is the administrative capital and Seri Menanti the Royal Town, Rembau was where historical events took place in the early history of Negeri Sembilan. For example, it was here that Raja Melewar was installed as the first ruler before assuming his throne at Seri Menanti. In its heydays, Rembau stood proudly as an independent state luak for three centuries. Thus, it is befitting that this cultural museum is located in this very historical district.
The Astana Raja Melewar is a replica of a 300 year-old palace of Raja Melewar, the first Yand Di-Pertuan Besar who ruled from 1773. The replica was built upon the orignal site Raja Melewar palace and was built as true as possible to its original design. This building houses several exhibition galleries including the Datuk Undang Luak Rembau institution exhibit, the Adat Perpatih exhibit, the Rembau General History exhibit, culture and traditions exhibit. A public library is also available here. The tomb of Raja Melewar can be found nearby the replica site.
