With the availability of the monorail in Kuala Lumpur city, why don’t you get out of the car or bike and embark on a journey around Kuala Lumpur city in a monorail. You will be surprised to know how cheap it is to ride in one while discovering many interesting places in Kuala Lumpur."
1. First stop - KL Sentral
Before hopping onto the KL Sentral monorail in Brickfields, stop by at any of the Indian restaurants to have a fulfilling breakfast. Try something light for breakfast such as the thosai that is served with chutney (made of coconut). You can also enjoy another dish, which is the roti canai. It tastes good with fish, chicken, mutton or dhal curry. Wash these down with a soothing glass of teh tarik (pulled tea) or cow’s milk. Still looking for more to savour? Order the savoury vadai (made of flour, grinded chili and onion) or sweet kesari (one of the many Indian sweets) to give your breakfast a finishing touch.
With a full tummy and energized body, you are now ready to explore the other part of Brickfields. Take a stroll along the streets in Brickfield to discover the many things you can purchase. The street is filled with Indian goodies such as sarees, trinkets, jewelleries, copper utensils and much more. You will be spoilt for choices at Brickfields! After that, make your way back to the monorail to head to your next stop. It costs RM1.20 from KL Sentral to Tun Sambanthan.
2. Next stop – Tun Sambanthan
After breakfast and bargain hunting, hop off the Tun Sambanthan monorail stop and head to an architectural beauty known as the Sri Kandaswamy Temple. Located within ten minutes, this temple was built back in 1903 and its design was inspired by a temple in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. This huge temple is bright and colourful with all the carved deities on the temple entrance wall resembling a structure that can hardly be found in Kuala Lumpur. Explore also the designs inside the temple and catch a glimpse of the morning pujas (prayers) held to give thanks to Lord Muruga.
Another temple in the vicinity is the Maha Vihara Temple for the Buddhist. This beautiful white building was built back in 1890’s. Known also as the Brickfield Buddhist Temple, this ‘holy ground’ was built to provide a place to practice Buddhism. Inside this temple, sits, stands and lies three giant status of Buddha. As you enter calmness will fill your body and mind.
Right next to it is Wisma Dharma Cakra, which is an institute complete with library and a resource centre.
3. Its lunch time at Bukit Bintang
After a tiring exploration of the interesting buildings around theTun Sambanthan stop, pay RM1.60, hop onto the monorail again and embark on the next part journey to Bukit Bintang. This is the hub for shopaholics and epicureans. Just across the street from Bukit Bintang monorail, there are two delightful lunch options for you. Tarbush and Naab, both equally serves delicious mouth-watering Lebanon and Persian dishes respectively. It’s a wholesome lunch with Tarbush’s grilled tiger prawn and garoupa grill fish with murtabal. Naab is no slacker too. It serves appetising lamb shanks, spinach roll chicken and sultari kebab in town.
Ready to shop for more? Walking distant from the monorail stop, just along the streets at Jalan Bukit Bintang, are the Sungei Wang Plaza, Lot 10, Bukit Bintang Plaza, Starhill, Low Yat Plaza and Bintang Walk. From IT gadgets to kitchen ware and branded clothes, you can get it all at these outlets.
To lessen your fatigue, take a break and sip a cool glass of ice lemon tea or any of your favourite drink at Planet Hollywood Restaurant & Bar. Don’t just stop here but move on to the next stop to Bukit Nanas, which only costs you RM1.20.
4. More at Bukit Nanas
Just a 5 minutes’ walk from the Bukit Nanas stop is the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, a virgin tropical rainforest getaway in the heart of bustling Kuala Lumpur. This approximately 11ha tropical rainforest also has a trail that leads to Kuala Lumpur Tower in 30 minutes. You get to see the tower, among the many things and trek at a place surrounded by lush greeneries. Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is open every day from 9am to 5pm.
It’s time to get your spa treatment, which is about 10 to 15 minutes walk around Bukit Nanas monorail stop. There are several excellent spas at the Hotels around Bukit Nanas to rejuvenate your body. Among the Hotels are Renaissance Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Concorde Hotel and Maya Hotel.
The sun has now gone down, and there is still more you can do after regaining your energy. But before that grab a quiet dining moment at Hard Rock Café, located at Concorde Hotel.
Are you now in the mood for some pulsating rhythm and all night party? Let’s hop on to the monorail and head to the next stop at Medan Tuanku. This ride costs you only RM1.20.
5. Party all night at Medan Tuanku
The famous Asian Heritage Row, located at Jalan Doraisamy is a stone’s throw from the Medan Tuanku monorail stop. Heritage Row displays a stretch of happening clubs that plays retro, R&B, techno and contemporary music. You can pick your genre of music from about 20 clubs/bistros available there. Just to name a few – Bar Savanh, Loft, Sunshine and The Rupee Room has among the best music for you to rock the dance floor all night long.
All you need here is your dancing feet. The clubs here open till 2am.
