The first commercial education school in Perak was founded in 1936 by K. Ramnath from Malabar, India. He was the author of "Brief Life Sketch of Sir Isaac Pittman, Some Common Merchantile Terms" and "Book-Keeping Simplified".
Kamaruddin Sutam Abidin, a Mandailing, invented the Malay shorthand called "Trengkas" during the Japanese Occupation and taught it here in 1955. He became an assistant to Dato' Onn Jaafar, the first President of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).
The Malay Shorthand Association of Malaya and The Perak Indian Chamber of Commerce were based here.
